Learn the basics of printmaking by carving your own 5x7 linoleum block and printing it onto an 8x10 sheet of paper. Choose from pre-designed images or bring your own idea to life. You'll leave with a handful of finished prints AND your carved linoleum block as a keepsake.

Each month will be a different theme. Participants with experience are encouraged to sign up for multiple sessions for guidance, supplies, and tools. 

What to Expect:
Brea will guide you through the carving process step-by-step, from transferring your design to carving clean lines to inking and printing. Even if you've never done printmaking before, you'll walk out with professional-looking prints you made yourself.

Unseen is a five-session (monthly) studio workshop series exploring the lives, methods, and significance of women artists who made some of the most powerful and innovative work in American art history — and were systematically overlooked, dismissed, or forgotten anyway. Each week centers on a different artist or group, asking not just what they made, but why they made it, how they made it, and why it still matters.

This is not an art history lecture. It is a making experience. Participants spend each session in conversation with one artist's life and work, then create their own original piece in response — using materials and approaches inspired by that week's artist. No prior art experience is required. What's required is curiosity, a willingness to try, and an interest in the question at the heart of every session: whose work gets remembered, and why?

Four Women in the Room Where It Happened

Abstract Art: Krasner, Thomas, Frankenthaler, Mitchell

Abstract Expressionism is one of the most celebrated movements in American art history. When people name its artists they almost always name men. These four women were not on the sidelines — they were co-creators of the movement, and in some cases more technically innovative than the men who got the credit.

We look at all four together: what connected them, what made each distinct, and what it meant to paint joy, emotion, and pure color in an era that preferred to spotlight their male peers.

Studio: Participants create an abstract color study responding to a personal emotion or memory — not illustrating it, but expressing it through color relationships, mark quality, and composition. Inspired by Thomas's mosaic rings, Frankenthaler's poured washes, Mitchell's gestural memory, and Krasner's bold reinvention.

Discussion: What does it feel like to make something purely expressive — with no subject, no story, just feeling translated into color and mark? What did these women understand about paint that their contemporaries didn't want to acknowledge?

Faith Ringgold spent years being rejected by galleries who told her quilts weren't serious art. So she made the quilt the art. Her story quilts — combining painting, fabric, and written narrative — changed what art could look like and whose stories it could tell. Her 1991 children's book Tar Beach grew from one of them. She received her first major recognition in her 60s.

Studio: Each participant creates a personal narrative panel — a single image that tells a story from their own life, memory, or community. Mixed media: drawing, paint, collage, words optional. Inspired by Ringgold's belief that the stories only you can tell are the ones most worth making.

Discussion: What story from your life has never been painted? What would it mean to make it visible? Whose stories are missing from the walls of the museums you've visited?

January — Women & Portraiture

Alice Neel spent decades painting the people no one else thought worth painting — her neighbors in Spanish Harlem, pregnant women, gay men, civil rights activists, her own aging body. She painted with radical psychological honesty: her subjects look back at you with full awareness that they are being seen. She didn't get a major retrospective until she was 74. She died at 84, finally recognized as one of the greatest American portrait painters of the 20th century.

Studio: Participants create a portrait of someone from their own life who deserves to be seen — rendered with the same unflinching honesty and dignity Neel brought to every subject. Medium is open: drawing, paint, collage, marker.

Discussion: Who in your world has never had a formal portrait made of them? What does it mean to look at someone — really look — and put them on the page? What does portraiture give the subject that photography doesn't?

February -- Making Something From NothingFolk Art: The Gee's Bend Quilters

In a remote Alabama community, generations of women — many descended from enslaved people — created some of the most radical abstract compositions in American art history. They were making blankets. They had no idea the art world would eventually compare their work to Rothko and Mondrian. They were working from necessity, tradition, and an intuitive genius that needed no validation.

Studio: Participants create an improvisational geometric collage using only scraps — torn paper, fabric, cut pieces — with no planning permitted. The constraint is the point: what happens when you can only use what's in front of you, and you have to trust your eye?

Discussion: What is the difference between craft and fine art — and who decided? What does it mean that these women made masterpieces while the art world wasn't watching?
